Overview

Magic is the silent current that winds through every stone and spire of the Evergild — and House of Spires stands as its gatekeeper.

Where once the fae wove spells freely beneath the open skies, House of Spires rose to shackle that wildness in law and oath. No enchantment is cast, no binding performed, without their silent blessing. To practice magic openly without their sanction is not merely reckless — it is a crime.

Founded during the first age of the Evergild, they built their authority not on strength of arms, but on mastery of the unseen: the threads of power that could unravel a city or weave its salvation. Over centuries, they gathered and hoarded sorcerous secrets, until even their kin grew wary of their grasp.

Today, they remain a pillar of the realm, but a cloaked and whispering one. Rivalry with the House of Scholars simmers like an old spell gone sour — a war not of armies, but of knowledge withheld and truths carefully bartered.

Domain

The seat of House Spires is Astravayne, a citadel of crystalline towers and soaring bridges that shimmer with residual magic. Though smaller than Lindral, it is no less formidable — perched atop the highest hill less than a day’s ride from the capital, its silhouette gleams by day and turns ghostly by night, as the sigils etched into its stones awaken beneath the stars.

Astravayne is not merely a fortress, but a sanctum of arcane law. At its heart lies the Sanctum Arcanum — a labyrinth of vaults, libraries, and courts where the Evergild’s most delicate magical rulings are crafted, judged, and enforced. Some of these decisions shape the realm. Others are never spoken of again.

Notable Subsections

  • The Starborn: Celestial scholars who chart the heavens, interpret omens, and weave stellar magic unknown to common spellcasters.
  • The Hexwrights: Grim enforcers who police rogue magic-users and inscribe binding spells into law and flesh alike.
  • The Spellforged: Artisans who bind magic into weaponry, artefacts, and structures, often weaving enchantments into the very bones of the city.

Notable Members

Note: While Illistar is the formal House name, some lesser branches occasionally adopt names tied to magical specialisation, though rarely in public.)

  • Vaelen Starborne Illistar — High Arcanist of Astravayne, a cold figure whose ambition burns hotter than any sun.
  • Serenne Illistar — A Hexwright and secret friend to Gwynviène Avenloré; a reserved but fiercely loyal enforcer dreaming of restoring lost freedoms.
  • Orrin Cael Illistar — Starborn astronomer who claims to have mapped the gaps between worlds, though few believe his quiet madness.
  • Lord Caladien Avenloré – (née Illistar) Married into the Avenloré family, rulers of House of Scholars, through Lady Syraëlle Avenloré

Whispers of Note

  • It is said the eldest Starborn have walked the spaces between the stars and returned bearing knowledge too heavy for mortal minds.
  • The Hexwrights carry silver-bound grimoires said to be able to unmake a sorcerer’s power with a single word.
  • Deep within Astravayne’s lowest vaults, a fragment of the first spell ever cast by faekind is kept under endless wards — and some claim it is beginning to stir.
